Communication Model, Victoria British Columbia, Canada

The Communication Model is probably a very good tool to be implemented when trying to take care of the ever rising Mental Health and Addictions challenges within Victoria, British Columbia. The Communication Model is of high-quality and it is known to give positive results. It is similar to Models of care such as the Open Dialogue Model of care in Finland, http://beyondmeds.com/2010/01/04/alternative-for-psychosis/  in the sense that medications for serious mental illness will take a back seat. The main difference between the Communication Model, which originated in Victoria, British Columbia and the Open Dialogue Model in Finland, is that the Communication Model focuses on individuals who experience psychological turmoil on a regular basis, but who are not (yet) part of the main Medical System, hence, they do not have an official DSM diagnosis. This is in contrast to the Open Dialogue Model in Finland. The Open Dialogue Model in Finland is a system of care which focuses on, for example, a person with schizophrenia, and their community. For example, a person with schizophrenia could choose his/her most loved-ones and include them in his/her rehabilitation plan. This rehabilitation plan resembles working together with his/her most important friends and family members (for example) and it also includes working with a psychiatrist and a couple of family therapist. The idea is that the family and friends, plus the family therapists (and if need be, a psychiatrist) work together supporting the needs of the individual with schizophrenia. At the same time, the team works together towards understanding. The Communication Model is more individualized. It focuses on the interaction between the individual with psychological distress and the practitioner, the main component is the communication. The communication is mapped by the practitioner through a counter-transference which finds itself in the form of a drawing, an abstract drawing. According to the Communication Model, an individual is not viewed as an individual, “who has a mental illness” instead is it the opposite. The Communication Model is built up from components from Art History, Life Experience and through the combination of both of those forms. For example, it is the communication between the human and the interaction with art that results is a decrease of distress. It is the intricate connection that develops that the Communication Model is really all about.

The Communication Model was not established through the lens of psychology nor through the lens of psychiatry. It is a coincidence that some components seem to overlap with the methods of care, as the Communication Model was developed and understood through the lens of analyzing visual art masterpieces, such as Vincent van Goghs’ artworks and Jackson Pollocks’ artworks (especially “Autumn” by Jackson Pollock, which symbolizes freedom). The Communication Model is about Existentialism and Individualism.
